Introduction to the Church of Santo Domingo: The Cathedral of Santo Domingo is built directly on the original Inca Sun Temple. The exterior is a Spanish-style church, but part of the Sun Temple is retained inside. During the Inca period, the temple walls were originally covered with 700 pieces of gold walls weighing two kilograms each, but now only the stone walls remain. Because the Inca stone walls were so strong, it was difficult for the Spanish colonists to tear them down when they built the church, resulting in today's mixed Inca and colonial-style buildings.
