Introduction to Castle Esplanade: Castle Esplanade is the square outside the gate of Edinburgh Castle and the western starting point of the Royal Mile.
The square in front of the castle was built in 1753 and was originally a training ground for the troops. Today, the military band of the Royal Scottish Guards performs here during the annual Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
