Historical background introduction: In 1579, British explorer Francis Drake discovered a strait connecting the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco, which later became the Golden Gate. The gold rush of 1849 made the Golden Gate an indispensable part of California's mysterious charm. Although the idea of building a bridge had long been thought of, it was not until 1937 that a suspension bridge was built across the strait.
