Introduction to the statue of Wu Liande: Wu Liande, a public health scientist and a pioneer in quarantine and epidemic prevention in China. At the end of 1910, the pneumonic plague was prevalent in Northeast China. He was appointed as the chief medical officer with full power and went deep into the epidemic area to lead the prevention and treatment, which was soon under control. In 1911, he chaired the International Plague Research Conference. With his vigorous advocacy and promotion, China took back its sovereignty over seaport quarantine. He successively presided over the establishment of a total of 20 quarantine stations, hospitals, and research institutes, and also founded the Harbin Medical College (the predecessor of Harbin Medical University). He, Yan Fuqing and others initiated the establishment of the Chinese Medical Association and founded the "Chinese Medical Journal".
