During the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty, Qi Junzao, a Jinshi scholar, gave a lecture at Hongdong Yufeng Academy after visiting Hongdong. Xi's brother sent a poem, which included the sentence "Lotus flowers make the city outline good, locust trees ruin the old village". Later, people called Hongdong "Lotus City".
