The lake has an altitude of 1,608 meters, an average water depth of 278 meters, and a deepest depth of 668 meters. The water salinity is 5.8%. It is an alpine lake that does not freeze. Among the world's alpine lakes, Lake Issyk-Kul is second only to Lake Titicaca in South America in area, but Lake Issyk-Kul ranks first in depth. The transparency of the lake water exceeds 12 meters, and the lake water has a high salt content, so it is also called "Salt Lake".
