Introduction to the Golden Gate: The Golden Gate is the oldest city gate in Jerusalem. According to Jewish tradition, the presence of the Holy One has always been revealed through this gate, and will be revealed again when the Messiah comes (Ezekiel 44:1-3), and a new gate will replace the current gate . Therefore, Jews often pray for mercy at this door, hence the name Mercy Gate. In the Christian Apocrypha, it is recorded that the Virgin Mary’s parents met at the Golden Gate. The remains of an even older city gate from the Second Temple era have been discovered. The current city gate was probably built in the 520s AD as one of Justinian I's construction projects in Jerusalem. It was built on top of the ruins of the earlier city gate.
