Introduction to the Eighteen Arhats: The Eighteen Arhats were originally the Sixteen Arhats, disciples of the Buddha Sakyamuni. According to the scriptures, they received the Buddha's instructions not to enter Nirvana, but to live in the world forever, living in different places, receiving offerings from people in the world, and creating a field of blessing for all living beings. The painters Zhang Xuan and Guan Xiu of the Five Dynasties drew pictures of Arhats, and suddenly they were inspired to include the monk Qingyou, the author of "Fa Biography". In order to make a pair, they added another one. From then on, the sixteen Arhats became the eighteen Arhats.
