Introduction to Hokkaido University: Hokkaido University was founded in 1876 and was formerly known as Sapporo Agricultural School. There are many places within the university that have been designated as important cultural properties, such as the Second Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, the Clark Statue, and the Poplar Avenue, which are worth seeing. Large trees such as elms, ginkgo, and poplars can be seen everywhere, so Hokkaido University is also called the "Elm Campus." Most of the buildings housing the various departments with a sense of history are European-style buildings, which have a Nordic flavor and are very popular among tourists.
