Introduction to Higashi Honganji Temple: Higashi Honganji Temple is the headquarters of the Shinshu Otani sect of the Pure Land Shin religion. It was built in 1602 and is officially called the Shinshu main temple. The Daishido Hall is equivalent to the Main Hall of Chinese Buddhist temples. Its height is second only to Todaiji Temple in Nara. It is the largest wooden building in Kyoto and one of the largest wooden buildings in the world. The 21st of every month is the day when Toji Temple holds the "Propaganda Market". The bustling market sells everything from snacks, folk crafts, daily necessities to antiques.
