Introduction to Donner Memorial Park: Donner Memorial State Park is a place full of mystery. Legend has it that errant pioneers were trapped here during the winter of 1846-47, and by cannibalizing their dead friends, less than half of them ultimately survived. Among them was a family of three named Donner. In order to prevent their children from eating the corpses of those who died of illness, when the father was about to die, he told his wife to let them eat his own flesh and blood to survive. Today, the 22-foot-tall Donner Memorial Sculpture stands in the park. The strong husband uses his body to block his wife and children, blocks the wind and snow with his hands, and looks into the distance, as if eager to find a way out.
