The architect who built the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral was the Englishman Frederick Gibberd, who had won a global design competition. Construction of the cathedral started in 1962 and took five years to complete. The cathedral is built of concrete and Portland stone, with a flat circular base 195 meters in diameter surrounding 13 chapels. The entire cathedral is conical in shape, with a truncated cone-shaped tower covering the top.
