Introduction to Hell's Gate: In the old days, Maastricht had many city walls, among which Hell's Gate (Helpoort) was part of the first city wall built in 1229. Its spire and brown-black walls are quite eye-catching. A white hut (Pesthuis) opposite the city gate was a hospital for Black Death patients at that time. Since infected patients usually had no cure and never returned, The city gate is like a hell gate that separates the living people inside the city from the dying people outside the city. Hell's Gate is the only remaining city gate in Maastricht and the oldest fortress-style city gate in the Netherlands.
