Introduction to Maastricht Carnival: The Maastricht Carnival starts on the Saturday 6 weeks before Easter and has three days of official activities. The tradition of wearing fancy costumes during the Carnival comes from the previous custom of "scaring ghosts and monsters". Each Dutch city has a group specifically responsible for organizing carnivals, called the "Council of Eleven", the "Prince of Carnival" ” It is the Eleventh Council that is responsible for selecting.
