Introduction to Rostov: Rostov (Ростов) is a tourist center on the Golden Ring and one of the oldest towns in Russia. People settled there as early as 4000 BC, mainly Finnish-speaking people, who were gradually assimilated by the Slavs coming from the south. Russians generally call it Rostov Velikiy, which means "Great Rostov" to distinguish it from Rostov on the Don River, an important town in southern Russia. Interestingly, this "Greater Rostov" actually has a population of just over 30,000, which is more than ten times smaller than the latter.
