Introduction to the monument at the former site of the National Museum of Central China: In 1933, based on the initiative of Mr. Cai Yuanpei, a modern democratic revolutionist and educator, the National Government established the Preparatory Office of the National Museum of Central China, with Cai Yuanpei serving as the chairman of the first board of directors. Construction started in 1936. It was originally planned to build three pavilions for humanities, crafts and nature. However, the construction was stopped due to the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War. It was not until the early 1950s that the central government carried out renovations and additions, and built the Humanities Museum, which is now the History Exhibition Hall. In March 1950, it was renamed the National Nanjing Museum. In 1959, the Nanjing Museum, the Jiangsu Provincial Museum, and the Jiangsu Provincial Cultural Relics Management Committee merged to form the Nanjing Museum.
