Introduction to school motto: Since its restructuring, National Taiwan University has been famous for its liberal academic style represented by President Fu Sinian. The school motto of "Dignity, Encouragement, Patriotism, and Loving People" was delivered by President Fu Sinian at the school's fourth anniversary commemoration in 1949. In the words, he hopes to encourage teachers and students to give instructions. After the sudden death of President Fu Sinian on December 20, 1950, in memory of President Fu, three professors, Hong Yanqiu, Hong Yaoxun and Su Xiangyu, proposed using these eight characters as the school motto.
