Farewell Spit Introduction: The large sand spit area of Farewell Spit presents two completely different landscapes. One side is the broad sea, and the other side is the hidden water. Farewell Point is located at the northernmost tip of South Island and extends for more than 30 kilometers directly into the Tasman Sea. It is a beautiful natural scenic area. The Maori called it Onetahua, which means "heaped sand". It has been a bird sanctuary since the 1930s, and more than 90 species of birds live here.
