Introduction to Mammoth: The mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) is the largest mammal ever seen in Norway and was once the largest elephant in the world. It is an animal adapted to cold climates. It eventually died out at the end of the Quaternary Ice Age due to climate warming and human hunting. The area near the Arctic Circle is where the most mammoth fossils have been unearthed. They were once important hunting targets for humans in the Stone Age, so tourists can see 30,000-year-old tusks.
