Introduction to the Freedom Monument: The Freedom Monument (Brīvības piemineklis) was built in 1935 and is 42 meters high. It was built to commemorate the soldiers who died during the Latvian War of Independence (1918-1920). It is an important symbol of Latvian freedom, independence and sovereignty. The three gold stars held high by the goddess at the top represent the three historical regions of Latvia.
