Introduction to Banzai Cliff: Banzai Cliff is the northernmost cliff on Saipan. In 1944, the US military attacked the Japanese base on the Mariana Islands. The Japanese army retreated to the northern end of the island. In order to avoid being captured, The prisoners shouted "Long Live the Emperor" and jumped from the cliff, which was later called "Long Live Cliff". The Japanese erected a Guanyin statue to commemorate the mourning pagoda next to the Banzai Cliff, and also erected a peace monument at the highest point of the cliff. Every year, many Japanese go to these two locations to pay homage.
