Introduction to Butrinti: Butrinti was listed as a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 1992. It was listed as a World Heritage in Danger in 1997 due to illegal excavation and lack of proper protection, management and preservation. In 1999, 184 hectares of surrounding area were added to the property's boundaries to facilitate conservation.
