Introduction to the Battleship Missouri Memorial Hall: The "Missouri", named after President Truman's home state, was launched into service on June 11, 1944. In January 1945, the "Missouri" officially joined the United States as the flagship of the 3rd Fleet. The Pacific Fleet participated in the Battle of Iwo Jima, the Battle of Okinawa and the attack on the Japanese mainland from February to July 1945. The USS Missouri witnessed the historic moment at the end of World War II. At 9:02 on September 2, 1945, the "Missouri" anchored in Tokyo Bay, Japan, became the place where Japan signed the unconditional surrender document, bringing an end to World War II.
