Introduction to the Economic and Social Council: The main responsibility of the Economic and Social Council is to promote economic and social progress, promote universal respect for human rights, and coordinate the work of the United Nations system, which includes more than 30 programs and specialized agencies. The Economic and Social Council Conference Hall is a gift from Sweden and was conceived by Swedish architect Sven Maklius, one of the 11 international architects responsible for designing the United Nations Headquarters. The surroundings, railings and doors of the delegation area are all made of Swedish pine. . The best feature of this room is that the ceilings in the public corridors are all exposed pipes, intended to remind people that the economic and social work of the United Nations is never finished; there is always more that can be done to improve the living conditions of people around the world.
