1. Why go hiking in Meili Snow Mountain?
1.1 Introduction to Meili Snow Mountain
Meili Snow Mountain is a huge north-south snow mountain group located in the east of Zayu County in Tibet and the west of Yunling Township in Deqin County, Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan, with a total length of 150 kilometers. It is called Kawagebo Snow Mountain in Tibetan areas, and the word "Meili" is the Chinese translation of the Deqin Tibetan language mainri, which means medicine mountain. It is named because it is rich in various precious medicinal materials [1-2]. At the same time, it is also the holy land of Yongzhong Bon religion, and is known as the four sacred mountains of Tibetan Buddhism together with Mount Kailash in Tibet, Animaqing Mountain in Qinghai, and Gaduo Juewo in Qinghai.
The highest pyramid-shaped peak is Kawagebo Peak, with an altitude of 6,740 meters. It is the highest mountain in Yunnan Province. It is located 10 kilometers southwest of Deqin County and 184 kilometers away from Zhongdian County.
Kawagebo, the main peak of Prince Snow Mountain, means "white snow mountain" in Tibetan and is commonly known as the "God of Snow Mountain". Legend has it that Meili Snow Mountain was originally a ferocious evil spirit with nine heads and eighteen arms. Later, he was taught by Master Padmasambhava, received the layman's ordination, converted to Buddhism, and became the son of a thousand Buddhas. From then on, he ruled the border areas and blessed the snowy land. The statue of Kawagbo is often enshrined on the altar. He rides a white horse and holds a long sword. He is majestic and looks like a protective god.
Although Kawagebo and its surrounding peaks are called "Thirteen Peaks", the meaning is based on the auspicious number "Thirteen" in Tibetan. In fact, it is not the exact thirteen snow peaks, but more peaks. collectively. Among the more famous peaks, there are Miancimu Peak, Jiwaren'an Peak, Bujiongsongjiewuxue Peak, Mabingzhalawangdui Peak, Chogui Laka Peak, and Shuolazan Gui Mianbu Peak. Among them, Cimu Peak, with its beautiful lines, means Sea Goddess, and is located on the south side of Kawagebo Peak. According to legend, this peak is the wife of Kawagebo Peak.
Kawagbo followed King Gesar on an expedition to the Eluohai Kingdom. The Eluohai Kingdom wanted to deceive them and falsely betrothed Miancimu to Kawagbo. Unexpectedly, Kawagbo and Miancimu fell in love with each other and would never be separated. Some people also say that Miancimu is the daughter of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Although she is the wife of Kawagebo, she still misses her hometown and faces her hometown. Snow peaks are always shrouded in clouds and mist, and people call it the shy veil of Mianzimu.
Jiwa Ren'an Peak, which means "Crown of the Five Buddhas", is a row of five flat and sharp peaks. It is located on the north side of Miancimu Peak with an altitude of 5770.5 meters. The Bujiongsong Jiewu Xuefeng, which is said to be the son of Kawagebo and Miancimu, is located between the Five Buddha Crown Peak and Kawagebo Peak. The patron saint of the northeastern part of Kawagebo is Ma Bing Zala Wangdui Peak, also known as the "Invincible God of War to Conquer Demons" (General Peak). Trouguiraka means the peak above the round lake, located above the cirque of the Skja Glacier.
There are four large glaciers in Meili Snow Mountain: Mingyong, Sinong, Niuba and Nongsong. They are rare modern glaciers in the world with low latitude, low temperature (minus 5℃) and low altitude (2700 meters) in Meili Snow Mountain. Among them, it is the longest and largest glacier. It is Mingyong Glacier. The Mingyong Glacier spreads in an arc from the Meili Snow Mountain at an altitude of 6,740 meters down to the virgin forest zone at an altitude of 2,600 meters. It stretches for 11.7 kilometers, has an average width of 500 meters, an area of 13 square kilometers, and an annual meltwater volume of 232 million cubic meters. It is the largest glacier in my country. The southernmost latitude of the modern glacier with the lowest extension of the glacier tongue. Whenever the temperature of the snow-capped mountains rises under the scorching sun, the glaciers are heated and melt, and hundreds of huge ice masses collapse and move downwards with a sound like thunder, earthquakes and mountain shaking, which is thrilling.
However, at the beginning of the 21st century, due to global warming and too many tourists, the Mingyong Glacier melted faster and is retreating at a rate of about 50 meters per year. This situation worries local residents and experts.
Karma Paxi, the second Karmapa, the founder of the reincarnation system of living Buddhas in Tibetan Buddhism, made a pilgrimage to Kawagebo in 1268 and determined the routes to and from Meili Snow Mountain.
1.2 Introduction to Yubeng Village
Yubeng Village is located in Yunling Township, Deqin County, at the eastern foot of Meili Snow Mountain in Yunnan. It is surrounded by mountains and has a unique geographical environment. It is 3,000 meters above sea level and is only connected to the outside world by a post road.
Since there is currently no road access, there are two post roads in the Xidang direction and Ninong direction to enter Yubeng. It is more convenient to take the Xidang post road. You need to walk or ride a mule, which is 12 kilometers uphill, 6 kilometers downhill, and over 3700 meters. Miyakou, in addition, Yubeng Village is located at the foot of Wuzi Peak under Nianci Mother Peak in Meili Snow Mountain. With beautiful scenery and simple folk customs, it is truly a paradise. Yubeng Village is divided into upper and lower villages. The upper village leads to the Sino-Japanese Joint Mountaineering Base Camp for climbing Kawagbo, while the lower village leads to Yubeng Shen Waterfall.
Yubengcun
Shangyu Bengcun
Before September 2012, it was the last natural village in Yunnan Province without electricity, relying on household small hydroelectric generators or solar power. The Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial Government proposed the task goal of "comprehensively solving the problem of electrification for the province's population without electricity in 2012". On September 28, 2012, the 10 kV power grid in Yubeng Village was fully completed and put into operation and energized, and mobile phones also had signals.
Due to long-term isolation from the outside world, Yubeng Village still retains many simple Tibetan folk customs. Among them, the most strange thing to the outside world is the phenomenon of brothers marrying only one wife and staying together regardless of family. Travel friends encountered many such examples in Yubeng Village, and finally understood what was going on. It turns out that the people of Yubeng Village believe that a family can only have one mistress. After the brother marries his sister-in-law and returns home, as long as the brothers do not separate the family, the younger brother can also treat his sister-in-law as his wife, and the family can live like this forever.
Tractors transported by mules and horses
However, once this happens, a "realistic" question arises again. If a brother in a family has only one wife, whose child will be born? According to the results of inquiries by travel friends, many families will solve the problem like this. One year, the elder brother was at home and the younger brother went out to work. The next year, the younger brother came back and the older brother went out. In this way, isn't it easy to figure it out? However, even if he is not the biological father, the children will still call their brothers "dad", regardless of their relative distance, and they will live happily together.
1.3 The fun of hiking in Yubeng
Isolated by the mountains, Yubeng Village is within easy reach of the Meili Snow Mountain. The scenery is beautiful, just like the paradise in Tao Yuanming's works. In the past, when mobile phones were not available, coming to Yubeng Village was equivalent to being isolated from the world.
If you like tranquility, you can sit in the yard every day, make a pot of tea among the colorful flowers, and spend a peaceful day in the company of Goddess Peak.
If you like photography, you can go through the winding paths in the forest to explore the wonderful scenery of the Ice Lake and Divine Waterfall, or go through the canyon to Ninong on the bank of the Lancang River to take a look at the roaring Lancang River.

3. Hiking strategy.
Yubeng hiking route map
Yubeng Hiking is a short section of the Meili Ring Route that turns mountains. It is an entry-level hiking route. As long as you exercise regularly, you can basically complete it. If you are not in good physical condition, you can choose to ride a horse.
Although it is an entry-level hiking route, it does not mean that it is without danger. Any outdoor activity has certain risks. Leaving the familiar environment, many people will cause accidents due to inexperience.
There have been more than one travel friend, including an Israeli girl with rich outdoor experience, who froze to death because he took the wrong road (there are many forks in the direction of Yubeng towards Ninon, and you will get lost if you are not careful). One travel friend even accidentally lost his The hiking pole was inserted into his thigh, and he had to be transported by horse overnight for treatment. Fortunately, he was rescued in time and his life was saved.
Snow accumulates in winter, and if you are not careful, you may step into a snow pit above your knees.
3.1 Equipment
The climate of Meili Snow Mountain is changeable, with frequent rains and heavy snow covering the ground in winter. You must be fully prepared according to the actual conditions. The difficulty of hiking will vary greatly due to climate change.
dirt road after rain
Hiking shoes: The most important thing for hiking is a suitable pair of shoes. In addition to ensuring the hiking speed, it can also prevent slipping and reduce the probability of sprained feet. If you have sufficient funds, it is recommended to buy shoes with good waterproof performance. Otherwise, the shoes will get soaked in rainy days and walking will be very uncomfortable. When hiking when it snows, it is recommended to wear high-top shoes.
Hiking bag: Yubeng Hiking is not difficult. You only need to bring the necessary clothes. Depending on your personal situation, a 40-50 liter hiking bag is enough. Extra things can be stored at Feilai Temple (or Xidang ) inn.
Outdoor socks: Outdoor socks are thicker than ordinary socks and are highly breathable and comfortable.
Trekking poles: It is recommended to bring two trekking poles. If you don’t want to bring them, you can find two wooden sticks on the road instead, which can play a balancing role and reduce the probability of sprained feet.
Quick-drying clothes: If you go in summer, it is recommended to wear quick-drying clothes and pants, so that even if it rains, you can dry them quickly.
Thermal underwear: It is recommended to wear it when you go in autumn and winter. The altitude is high and it is very cold in the forest. It is easy to catch a cold if you catch a cold.
Jacket or down jacket: a must-have in autumn and winter . The windproof and warm function of the jacket is very important.
Gloves: A must-have in autumn and winter. In cold weather, if your hands are exposed outside, it is easy to get frostbite.
Warming patch: A must-have for those who are afraid of the cold in autumn and winter, especially when hiking on glacial lakes, or if you want to shoot the stars outdoors at night, it can play a good role in keeping warm.
Knee pads: Hiking can easily cause damage to the knee joints, especially for people who lack exercise. An 8-hour hiking trip a day, going up and down the mountain dirt road, will put a lot of pressure on the knee joints. It is recommended to bring them. , to avoid leaving behind any trouble.
Small flashlight: Most of the accommodations in Yubeng Village do not have independent bathrooms. It is very useful to go to the bathroom at night. Now mobile phones have a flashlight function, so you can do it without it. If it is the rainy season, it is better to bring it with you. If you don't finish it in time before dark, Hiking and walking at night can provide safety.
Underwear: It is better to bring 2-3 sets. Clothes are not easy to dry in rainy season, and it is easy to sweat when hiking in summer.
Snow cover: A must-have for hiking in winter, especially if you want to hike to Xiaonong Base Camp and Ice Lake. There is knee-deep snow on the road. If there is no protection from the snow cover, the snow will get into the shoe through the opening of the shoe.
Lipstick: It is recommended to bring it. Lips are prone to chapped in the plateau area. In addition, restaurants along the way mainly serve Sichuan cuisine. If your lips are chapped, it will be difficult to eat no matter how delicious the food is.
Hat, raincoat, sunscreen, sunglasses: choose these according to the situation.
3.2 Food
The hike takes 8 hours a day, so bring some beef jerky, energy bars, chocolate, fruits and other dry food to replenish calories in time. From Xidang Village, there is a place that provides instant noodles halfway.
Walking from Ninong, there is a village halfway, and you can eat noodles at the villagers’ houses.
After traveling all the way to Yubeng Village, if there are many people, you can order stewed chicken together, which is delicious and can relieve the fatigue of the day.
3.3 Drugs
Friends who are worried about hypersensitivity can eat rhodiola rosea a week in advance (the specific effect is unclear, but it may have a comforting effect). Eating it on the road is of little use.
Cold medicine, antipyretics, analgesics, bruises, band-aids, gastrointestinal medicines.
3.4 Detailed hiking itinerary
Hiking in Yubeng takes two days to enter and exit. If you want to hike the Shen Waterfall, Ice Lake, and Xiaonong Base Camp in Yubeng Village, it will take two days. According to your own time arrangement, the entire trip can be completed in 2-4 days.
DAY 1: (11 kilometers, about 6-8 hours)
Xidang-Nanzong Pass (3729 meters): This is the most difficult section of the road to Yubeng. The distance is 6.1 kilometers, but the altitude has to rise 1000 meters. Travel time: 3-5 hours.
Note: There are garbage collection boxes along the way, please protect the environment and do not litter.
Nanzong Pass (3729 meters) - Shangyu Beng Village (3160 meters): The distance is 3.3 kilometers and the descent is 600 meters. Although it is downhill, if it encounters rain or snow, the road will be difficult to walk, so you must pay attention to safety. Travel time: 1-2 hours.

Looking down at Yubeng from Shangyubeng
PS: Yubeng Village is divided into Yubengshang Village and Yubengxia Village. Yubengshang Village is close to Binghu Lake, and Yubengxia Village is close to Shenfu Waterfall, so if you plan to go to Binghu Lake on the second day of your trip, you can stay there the night before. In Shangyubeng Village, if you plan to go to the Shen Waterfall on the second day of your itinerary, you can go directly to Yubeng and stay there when you arrive in Yubeng on the first day!
DAY 2: (The journey is 14 kilometers and takes about 6-8 hours)
Shangyubeng Village (3160 meters) - Xiaonong Base Camp (3623 meters): distance 3.7 kilometers, travel time: 1.5-2.5 hours.
Hiking on the ice lake is quite difficult, so it is better to start early. Generally, we start at 8:00 in the morning and return to the village at 5:00 in the evening.
There are no supplies on the road (there may be people selling instant noodles at Xiaonong Base Camp during the peak season, so you can ask the innkeeper), so you need to bring enough dry food.
Xiaonong Base Camp (3623 meters) - Ice Lake (3900 meters): distance 2.3 kilometers, journey 1-2 hours.
PS: This section of the road will be covered with snow in winter, and the mountain may be closed to hike.
DAY 3: (The journey is 6 kilometers and takes 3-5 hours)
Yubeng Village (3090 meters) - Shen Waterfall (3657 meters): The distance is 6 kilometers and the journey takes 1.5-2.5 hours.
Hiking to the Shenfu Waterfall is not difficult. Those with strong physical strength can combine the Shenfu Waterfall Hiking and the Ninong Return to Feilai Temple for one day. It is generally not recommended. The scenery along the way is very good. Now that you are here, having fun is the key.
The most difficult walk to the Shen waterfall is the last section of the road to the Shen waterfall. It is steep and rocky. Remember to bring a raincoat because the water from the Shen waterfall will fall from the sky.
Precautions:
Local believers will place some of their accessories on the mountain path, which have unique religious meanings. Please do not take them away, otherwise you will receive karma.
DAY4: (travel 16 kilometers, takes 4-6 hours)
Yubeng Village (3090 meters)-Ninong (2136 meters): distance 16 kilometers, travel time: 4-6 hours.
Passing through the beautiful Ninong Grand Canyon along the way, you can see the vast and magnificent scenery of the Lancang River.
The Ninong Route is downhill along the way and is not very difficult. There are many forks in the road ahead, so you have to go back and forth to the left and right of the stream several times. Remember, in the end, you will return to the left-hand road and follow the canal.
After leaving the valley, the road to the Lancang River is more dangerous. The road along the water channel is narrow. It is not recommended to take this road during the rainy season. If there are rockfalls on the mountain, it will be very dangerous.

There is a bus back to Feilai Temple as soon as you go uphill.
Nylon to Deqin County (Feilai Temple): During the peak season, there will be many minibuses waiting for passengers in the Nylon parking lot, but in the off-season, you need to reserve a driver in advance, otherwise it is easy to not get a car in the Nylon parking lot. The distance is 40km, the journey takes 1-1.5 hours, and the chartered car (carpooling) fee is 180-200 yuan/car.
PS: If you want to challenge yourself, you can also choose to hike to Shenhu Lake. Shenhu Lake is 4,350 meters above sea level and takes more than 20 kilometers back and forth. There are many forks along the way and it is easy to get lost. It is best to ask a guide to lead you. Normally, we depart at 7:00 in the morning and return to the village between 10:00 and 11:00 in the evening.
The Holy Lake is located at the foot of the 6,600-meter goddess peak Mantsim Peak among the Thirteen Peaks of Meili. It is the place where Tibetans go to the lake on August 15 every year. The lake water is melted from snow-capped mountains and glaciers and is regarded as sacred water. You can only drink it, but you are not allowed to wash your hands, feet, or wash your hands.
The Shenhu hiking route is not suitable in winter and spring, as snow and rain are very dangerous.
After crossing the river from Yubeng to Ninong Road, pay attention to the path up the mountain. There is a "No Passage" sign on the road to Shenhu . The reason why it is "no access" is to show that this scenic spot has not yet been developed and you must take responsibility for it.
Note: For the above hiking routes, except for the Shenhu route, you can ride mules and horses at your own expense. Contact the innkeeper or tour leader. Prices vary in off-peak and peak seasons, and are about 200-300 yuan one way. It's best to leave the innkeeper's phone number before departure. If you encounter an accident on the way, you can contact the owner to negotiate for rescue.

4. Safety precautions.
4.1 Be especially careful when hiking in rainy season and winter. Conditions are different every day. If you encounter heavy rain or heavy snow, you would rather give up the trip than be brave. If you are not sure whether the conditions allow it, please consult the locals.
4.2 Although phone calls are available in Yubeng Village, the signal is not good in many places. It is best to leave the innkeeper’s phone number with your friends before hiking. If you do not report safety in time, ask your friends to contact rescue. Talk to the innkeeper about your daily hiking itinerary and remind him what time of night no one comes back to help with the rescue.
4.3 If the weather is abnormal near the glacial lake, an avalanche will occur. This is where the Chinese and Japanese mountaineering teams were killed. Do not walk to the bottom of the glacial lake at will, and do not howl loudly.
4.4 When traveling by car to Ladqin in Shangri-La in winter and spring, be sure to bring wheel anti-skid chains. Sometimes it snows heavily in the Baima Snow Mountain area, making vehicles slippery when walking on the mountain. Some self-driving cars do not have anti-skid chains and are forced to give up.
4.5 Respect local customs and customs.
When drinking butter tea, the host pours the tea, and the guest has to wait until the host holds it in front of him before he can take it and drink it.
Don’t spit or clap your hands on other people’s backs. When you encounter religious facilities such as temples, Mani piles, and pagodas, you must go around from left to right. Those who believe in Bon religion must go around from the right. Do not cross ritual objects or braziers.
Prayer tubes and prayer wheels cannot be reversed.
It is taboo for others to touch the top of your head with their hands.
When entering a temple, it is taboo to smoke, touch Buddha statues, read scriptures, or ring bells and drums. It is even more forbidden to touch the amulets, rosary beads and other religious artifacts worn by lamas;
Be quiet in the temple, keep your body upright when sitting, and avoid sitting on the seat of a living Buddha;
Avoid making loud noises, hunting and killing animals near the temple.
5. Harvest.
Hiking is a journey that combines body and mind. The unique scenery of Meili Snow Mountain and the closed environment of Yubeng Village can make people feel some of the first touches in life when they are extremely tired.
