The Xinfengjiang Reservoir Dam is the world's first over 100-meter-high concrete dam that has withstood the test of a magnitude 6 earthquake. The dam is 6 kilometers away from the urban area of Heyuan. It is a concrete structure with a height of 124 meters and a crest width of 5 meters. The length is 440 meters and there are 3 holes in the spillway section. From July 11 to 14, and from August 9 to 16, 1997, the dam opened its gates twice to release floods. The lake water poured out from the gates, accompanied by thunderous whistling sounds, and rolled up thousands of piles of snow, like a river.
