Chengde Mountain Resort is an ancient Chinese imperial palace where the Qing emperors escaped the summer heat and handled government affairs. It is located in the north of Chengde City, Hebei Province. It was first built in 1703 and completed in 89 years during the reigns of Emperors Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty. It is known as one of the four famous gardens in China along with the National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units, namely the Summer Palace, the Humble Administrator's Garden and the Lingering Garden.In the 20th year of Emperor Kangxi's reign (1681), the Qing government established Mulan Paddock on the Mongolian grassland more than 350 kilometers away from Beijing in order to strengthen the management of Mongolia and consolidate the northern border defense. Every autumn, the emperor led tens of thousands of people including princes, ministers, the Eight Banners Army, and even concubines and royal descendants to Mulan Paddock for hunting in order to train the army and consolidate the border defense. In order to solve the emperor's food and accommodation along the way, 21 palaces were built between Beijing and Mulan Paddock, and the Rehe Palace - the Summer Palace was one of them.

The Summer Resort is located in the north of the central area of Chengde City, on the narrow valley on the west bank of the Wulie River. The architectural layout of the resort can be roughly divided into Palace area The scenic area is divided into two parts: the lake area, the plain area and the mountain area. There are 72 scenes designated by Emperor Kangxi and Emperor Qianlong. There are more than 100 buildings including palaces, halls, towers, pavilions, terraces, pavilions, pavilions, halls and temples. The lotus flowers in the villa are very famous. The ponds are filled with lotus flowers in July and August, and they bloom until the end of September. The lotus in the villa is very different from the lotus in other areas. It blooms early and fades late. It is particularly worth seeing.
Huzhou District is the most beautiful place in the villa. Boating on the lake would be a good choice.
The four buildings including the Main Palace, Songhezhai, East Palace and Wanhe Songfeng have been turned into museums for the exhibition of Qing Dynasty palace history records and palace artworks, which can be an eye-opener for tourists.
You can also visit Puning Temple Scenic Area and have a personal experience of Tibetan Buddhist activities.
Tour route:
The Summer Resort has a vast area. If you only have one day, the following route can cover most of the highlights in the resort: Li Zhengmen → Inner Meridian Gate → Danbo Jingcheng Hall → Sizhi Bookstore → Yanbo Zhishuang Hall → Yunshan Resort Building → Cailing Ferry → Ruyizhou → Yanyu Tower → Canglang Island → Changhu → Wenjin Pavilion → Rehe Spring → Jinshan Pavilion → Shuixin Pavilion → Donggong Ruins → Dehui Gate.
But there are several other routes that are frequently visited:
East route: Enter Dehui Gate, pass through the East Palace, and start with Juana Shengjing. Scenic spots that can be visited along the east line: Shuixin Pavilion, Wenyuan, Qingshu Mountain Pavilion, Moonlight River Sound, Jiade Hall, Huiwanzong Spring Temple, Xinsuo, Jinshan, Xiangyuan Yiqing, Rehe Spring .
Middle line: From the Xiawanhe Songfeng Dengdao to Ruyi Lake and the arch bridge between Xiahu Lake, it is the starting point of the middle line. Pass by Zhijing Yundi, go to Cailingdu, Ruyizhou, and reach Qinglian Island (Yanyu Tower) where the center line ends.
West route: Exit the Xiuyun Gate of the main palace, go down Yulin Slope, go north along the west bank of Ruyi Lake, and branch off at "Shui Shui Yun Zai". One is to turn east to Pingxiangpan; the other is to go north to Wenjin. The Pavilion is a tourist route on West Road in Huzhou District, and is also the main transportation line connecting the four functional areas of the park. The main attractions include Ruyi Lake (Pavilion), Fang Yuanju, Fangzhu Linliu, Linfang Villa, Sound of Springs from Far and Near, and Wenjin Pavilion.

Self-guided tours
The Summer Resort is located in the urban area of Chengde, with convenient transportation. The Beijing-Chengde Railway, Beijing-Tongcheng Railway, Chengshi Railway and Chengshen Railway run through the entire Chengde area, with frequent train services. You can take buses 5, 7 and 11 from Chengde Railway Station to the resort. Taxi fares start at 7 yuan, and generally any point in the urban area to the Summer Resort costs no more than 10 yuan, which is a moderate price.
Self-driving car
Chengde has roads radiating in all directions. National Highways 101, 111, 112, Beijing-Chengde Expressway (G45), Chengtang Expressway (G25), Chengchao Expressway (G25) pass through the territory. Chengqin Expressway and Chengchi Expressway (G45) are under construction and are expected to be opened to traffic in 2013. To the north, it can reach Inner Mongolia, to the east, it can reach Liaoning, to the southwest, it can reach Beijing, and to the southeast, it can reach Tianjin and Tangshan. It only takes 2 hours to get from Beijing to Chengde.
