Gongyi Grotto Temple was founded during the period of Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty. It is one of the large-scale royal grottoes used to hold Buddhist rituals in the Northern Wei Dynasty. It is also the starting point of the land route of the world-famous Silk Road. Later dynasties successively carved niches and statues here. There are now five caves, more than 300 Buddhist niches, and 7,743 statues, which are of high artistic and historical value. Gongyi Grottoes is a grotto excavated after the Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang. It was called Xixuan Temple when it was first built.
