Chongqing University was founded in 1929. As early as the Republic of China, it was one of the most outstanding national universities in China. It enjoys the reputation of "Chongqing was born from the confluence of Jialing River and Yangtze River, and Chongqing was developed from the combination of humanities and science". Today, Chongqing University is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education, one of the 31 central vice-ministerial universities, and one of the 34 universities with independent graduate admissions. It is jointly built by the Ministry of Education and Chongqing City. It is a key university in the national "211 Project" and "985 Project", and a key university in the national "111 Project".

Chongqing University was founded in 1929. As early as the 1940s, it became a national comprehensive university with six colleges, including liberal arts, science, engineering, business, law, and medicine. A large number of famous scholars, such as Li Siguang, Ma Yinchu, He Lu, Feng Jian, Ke Zhao, Wu Mi, and Wu Guanzhong, have taught at the university. In May 2000, the former Chongqing University, Chongqing Jianzhu University, and Chongqing Architectural College formed the new Chongqing University. It now has four campuses, A, B, C, and Huxi, covering an area of 5,700 acres. It has 26 colleges, as well as a graduate school, a school of continuing education, a school of online education, and a school of urban science and technology. There are 20 postdoctoral mobile stations, 133 doctoral degree authorization points, 199 master's degree authorization points, and 9 professional degrees such as MBA.
