Xi'an Jiaotong University was formerly known as Nanyang Public School founded in Shanghai in 1896. It was renamed Jiaotong University in 1921. In 1956, the State Council decided to move Jiaotong University to Xi'an. In 1959, it was named Xi'an Jiaotong University and was listed as a national key university. In 1999, it was identified by the country as a school with the goal of building a world-renowned high-level university. In April 2000, the State Council decided to merge Xi'an Medical University, which had been under the Ministry of Health for more than 60 years, and Shaanxi University of Finance and Economics, which had been under the People's Bank of China for more than 40 years, into Xi'an Jiaotong University.
