The ancient city of Polonnaruwa was the second capital of Sri Lanka in 993 AD and is located in the northeastern part of Sri Lanka. At the end of the 10th century AD, Anuradhapura, the then capital and Buddhist center, began to decline, and Polonnaruwa became famous for replacing it. It became deserted in the 14th century and was rebuilt into a modern city at the beginning of the 20th century. Most of the existing monuments were built during the reigns of Parakarama Pahu the Great and Nishan Kamala.
