Introduction to the Angel Courtyard: The "Angel Courtyard" is named after the statue of Archangel Michael placed at the highest point of the castle. Legend has it that in 590 AD, Pope Gregory I met Archangel Michael on the castle. Archangel Michael appeared and ordered the erection of a statue of an angel holding a sword on the top of the castle to combat the Black Death that was prevalent at the time, hence the name of the castle.
The statue of Michael the Archangel was originally a stone statue, but was later replaced by a bronze statue. The earlier stone statue was placed at the entrance of the museum.
