Scenic spot introduction:

Castel Sant'Angelo was originally the mausoleum of the Roman Emperor Hadrian. The castle is located on the right bank of the Tiber River in Rome, at the westernmost end of the ancient Roman area. The castle is round on the top and square on the bottom, and the outer wall is in the shape of a five-pointed star. The shape is tall and solid. Castel Sant'Angelo has been mentioned in art works such as the movie "Roman Holiday", the opera "Tosca" and the thriller novel "Angels and Demons".

Attractions distribution:

Castel Sant'Angelo was built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian between 135 and 139 AD as a mausoleum for himself and his family. From then on, until Emperor Caracalla in 217 AD, the remains of many emperors and their royal family members were also placed here. In the 6th century AD, when the Black Death was prevalent, Pope Gregory I dreamed that the Archangel Michael came and stood on the top of the castle with a sword to drive away the disease. Therefore, a bronze statue of the angel was placed on the top of the castle, and the castle was renamed "Castle Sant'Angelo". In the 15th century, a passage was built between the castle and the Vatican Papal Palace, which was used as a fortress for the pope to take refuge. Today, the interior of the castle has been converted into a museum to display the pope's bedroom, weapons from past dynasties, and famous artworks.
