Introduction to Baizhang Huaihai Statue: Baizhang Huaihai (720-814) was a native of Shajing, Heshang Town, Changle City, Fuzhou. His real surname was Wang and his common name was Muzun. Huaihai learned the Dharma from Mazu Daoyi in Hongzhou, Jiangxi Province, and became a disciple. He later lived in Baizhang Mountain in Hongzhou and founded a Zen monastery to promote the Dun Sect. He became a great master of Zen Buddhism and was later called the Patriarch of Baizhang. Huaihai pioneered the "simultaneous development of agriculture and Zen" and led people to farm. He once went on a hunger strike because he did not participate in labor, "a day without work, a day without food." His words and deeds became the custom of monks. The "Baizhang Qinggui" he pioneered was regarded as a commandment by later generations and was promulgated by the imperial court and is still observed today.
