Introduction to the Fountain of the Four Rivers: The Fountain of the Four Rivers (Fontana del Quattro Fiumi) is located in the center of the square and was created by Bernini. In the center of the fountain is an Egyptian obelisk, with four statues carved on the marble base, representing the Ganges, Danube, Nile and La Plata rivers.
Legend has it that the statue representing the Nile covered his face with his hands because in front of him was the Church of St. Agnes designed by Bernini's archenemy Borromini, a metaphor for Bernini's satire on his opponent. In fact, the statue had been completed before the design of the main entrance of the church was started. The reason for covering his face with his hands was because the source of the Nile River was not discovered at that time.
