Introduction to the Moorish Fountain: The Moorish Fountain is located at the southern end of the square. The fountain was originally designed by Giacomo della Porta in 1575. In 1653, Bernini added the Moorish Fountain above. The fountain originally had only four fish-tailed Tritons blowing conches and a central pool. Later Bernini added a muscular statue in the middle riding a dolphin because he looked like a Moor. (i.e. Africans), so the entire fountain is called the Moorish Fountain.
In 1874, maintenance work on the fountain moved the original sculpture to the Villa Borghese Gallery, and a replica was placed in the square.
