Introduction to the Bronze Canopy: The bronze canopy was carved by Bernini, the father of Baroque art. It is supported by 4 spiral copper columns and is as high as a 5-story building. The semicircular railing in front of the canopy is lit with lights. There are 99 ever-burning lamps, and below is the Pontifical Altar and St. Peter's tomb. Only the Pope can hold Mass on this altar, facing the rising sun, in front of pilgrims.
