Scenic spot introduction:

The Basilica of St. Paul in Rome (Italian: Basilica di San Paolo fuori le Mura) is one of the four great papal basilicas of the Roman Catholic Church. Because it is the farthest from the city, far outside the ancient city of Rome, it is also called "Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls".

Attractions distribution:

Saint Paul (3 AD - 67 AD), also known as the Apostle Paul, translated as Saint Paul in Catholicism, was originally named Saul. He was born in Cilicia, north of Judea. He was a descendant of Abraham and an Israelite of the tribe of Benjamin. At that time, he was called Saul of Tarsus. According to the principle of nationality by birthplace, Saul had the status of a Roman citizen. He did not believe in Jesus at first, and believed that preaching Jesus was a heresy that violated traditional beliefs, so he tried his best to persecute those who believed in Jesus. On his way to Damascus to persecute Christian disciples, he was miraculously chosen by Jesus, repented and took the name of Jesus, and changed his name to Paul. Saint Paul made at least three long missionary journeys in his life, and his footprints were all over Asia Minor, Greece, and Italy. He established many churches among the Gentiles and had a far-reaching influence. At that time, because the Jewish priests persecuted Christians, they instigated the Jews in Jerusalem to capture Paul and sent him to the local government of the Roman regime, demanding his execution. According to Christian legend, Paul was released from the Roman prison soon and went to Spain and the British Isles. During the reign of Emperor Nero, St. Paul was imprisoned for the second time in a Roman prison and was martyred there. His commemoration day is June 29, celebrated jointly with St. Peter.
Located on the west bank of the Tiber River, above the burial site of St. Paul, the Basilica of St. Paul was built by order of the Roman Emperor Constantine I. In 386 AD, Theodosius I ordered the expansion of the church, and by the fifth century, the church was even larger than the old St. Peter's Basilica. In 1823, the church was severely damaged by fire, and only part of the monastery built in 1841 survived. The Basilica of St. Paul that we see now is a reconstruction of the original appearance of the church in its heyday in the 4th century. It has an elegant and solemn appearance, and its theological implications and artistic achievements are profound and rich.
