Turpan Desert Botanical Garden is one of the 12 botanical gardens directly under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It is the only desert botanical garden in the arid desert area of ​​northwest China and the lowest botanical garden in the world. It is located in the heart of the Turpan Basin in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China. On the quicksand land, with an altitude of 95 to 76 meters, it is the second lowest land in the world. It has a warm temperate inland arid desert climate and is commonly known as "Wind Bank" and "Fire Continent".

The Turpan Desert Botanical Garden was built in 1976 and covers an area of ​​34 hectares. The garden mainly focuses on the introduction, domestication and expansion of propagation of sand-fixing plants. It also has functions such as research on sand damage prevention and control, popular education on desert plants, and ornamental tourism. It has preserved various types of desert area plants. There are more than 600 species, including more than 40 endangered species.
The botanical garden is divided into two gardens: the north and the south: the north garden is the office and living area of ​​the staff, which includes laboratory buildings, expert apartments, multi-functional halls, restaurants, desert plant introduction and cultivation areas, and a special garden (area) Desert economic fruit tree germplasm resource nursery; the south garden has a desert plant living germplasm specimen garden, a specialized garden for ethnic medicinal plants, a specialized garden for desert economic fruit trees, a specialized garden for desert wild ornamental plants, and a specialized garden for desert rare and endangered endemic plants. Special gardens (areas) include the special garden of halophytic desert plants, the special garden of Tamarix botanica, the special garden of Shaguai Zaozao (germplasm resource garden) and the special garden of grapes in arid areas.
