Important festival: The "Birdman" Festival is held in February every year to meet the needs of tourism.
In ancient times, when seagulls flew in August and September every year, the islanders would gather at the Orongo Seaside. Each tribe would elect a contestant to swim down the cliff to the sea and swim to the large reef 2 kilometers away to look for bird eggs. The first contestant to get the bird eggs would immediately swim back to the island and hand the eggs to his chief, who would become the "Birdman" of the year. Throughout the year, he was worshipped as a god by the islanders. Because of the frequent shark attacks when swimming to get eggs, this activity has been stopped for more than 100 years. Today, the "Birdman" festival retains the sacred sacrificial rituals and colorful makeup performances, and the "Birdman" is still the god worshipped by the islanders.
