According to official research, Kiev was built in 482 AD. It is one of the cultural centers of the ancient Slavic people and was once the center of the first Russian state, Kievan Rus, and is therefore known as the "Mother of Russian Cities."
Kiev covers an area of 825 square kilometers. The city is divided into 10 administrative districts. The city center is the old town located on the right bank of the Dnieper River. Although many buildings in the old town were built after the war, it still retains the old street pattern. Most of the historical buildings in the city are also concentrated here, such as the famous Sophia Cathedral (built in the 11th century, now a museum), etc. There are also many museums, theaters, public buildings, and large department stores in and outside the old city; the north side of the old city was originally a trade and Jewish district, now a river port; the Pechersky District on the south side has many major buildings in Ukraine, such as the Parliament Building, etc. The Pecherskaya Monastery built in the 11th century is the most famous and important monastery in the history of the former Soviet Union; the industrial and residential areas around the central area are beautifully planned, and there are parks and green belts between the scattered buildings, including the large botanical garden of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences and the small university botanical garden. There are several forest parks outside the city. After World War II, the city continued to develop towards the left bank of the Dnieper River, and there are highways and railway bridges connecting the two banks.
There are many places of interest and historical sites in Kiev, such as the Sofia Cathedral (11th century), the Golden Gate (11th century), and the Pechersk Lavra (10th century), which are must-sees for tourists.
